Gilad Atzmon and The Orient House Ensemble celebrate the music of John Coltrane with the release of their new album The Spirit of Trane at PizzaExpress, Soho, amid an extensive UK tour. The Spirit of Trane marks fifty years since the death of John Coltrane and reflects upon the beauty of the great man’s music.
John Coltrane was the most influential tenor saxophonist in jazz history. Whether it is his patented sheets of sound, his rapid-fire improvisations, the advanced harmonic progressions, the sonic impact of the best jazz quartet ever or his lush interpretations of the most beautiful ballads, no aspiring music lover can afford to neglect the music of Coltrane. Atzmon commented, “Coltrane was a voice of a generation, an artistic revolutionary spirit, a man who transformed anger into love and plight into a humanist message. Coltrane is for us jazz at its best: an authentic creative wave of constant transformation and innovation. Trane is for us, first and foremost, a spirit.”
The Orient Ensemble features Gilad Atzmon on tenor and soprano sax, Frank Harrison on piano, Yaron Stavi on acoustic bass and Enzo Zirilli on drums and the Sigamos String Quartet – Ros Stephen & Marianne Haynes – violin, Felix Tanner – viola & Laura Anstee – cello. The string arrangments are by Ros Stephen.
